The Coalition to End Homeless provides first, last, and security for families (defined loosely) who are homeless where at least one member of the family works or where the family can afford to keep up with rent after the first month. We work with you all year long to make sure that your family stays house, that is our priority: a roof over your head. We believe that homelessness is an Economic problem and we are here to help with the money you need to get housed.
An unknown homeless man once said: I was hungry, and you formed a humanities club and discussed my hunger. I was imprisoned and you crept off quietly to your chapel and prayed for my release. I was naked and in your mind, you debated the morality of my appearance. I was sick and you knelt and thanked God for your health, I was homeless and you preached to me of the spiritual shelter of the love of God. I was lonely and you left me alone to go and pray for me. But I'm still very hungry and lonely and cold.
Not here.
We always need volunteers and donations. We have only one paid staff person, the rest of our work is done by volunteers. If you think you have what it takes to mentor a homeless family, or if you want to help us put a roof over the head of children, we would be very grateful.
There are many misconceptions about homelessness, but here are the real facts on why homelessness occurs.
Housing
Affordable housing is very hard to find for many people, The National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates that the 2017 Housing Wage is $21.21 per hour, exceeding the $16.38 hourly wage earned by the average renter by almost $5.00 an hour, and greatly exceeding wages earned by low-income renter households. In fact, the hourly wage needed for renters hoping to afford a two-bedroom rental home is $13.96 higher than the national minimum wage of $7.25.
Poverty
Poor people are often unable to cover the cost of housing, healthcare, proper education, and more, especially when they have a family to provide for. Oftentimes housing is the service that people choose to sacrifice in these cases.
Domestic Violence
Being one of the primary causes of homelessness, domestic violence is yet another reason people become homeless. Sometimes when women are in abusive relationships they choose to live on the streets instead.
Mental Illnesses and Disabilities
In many cases, people who have severe mental illnesses or disabilities get in the way of having a job with a stable income. This is also the case with addiction, as some people may turn to drugs to relieve stress and fall down the wrong path due to it.
